Fern was successful in applying for a coaching bursary from Tyne & Wear Sport Support to support her with her netball level 2 qualification. We asked Fern Coulson from Ryton Netball Club what coaching means to her.
How did you get into Netball?
I have being playing netball since Year 5. My PE teacher played netball herself which helped us form a really good team who trained frequently together. This allowed me to progress playing netball into secondary school.
Have you been inspired by other coaches?
Absolutely! After school I joined Greencroft Netball Club who are an England Netball Accredited Bronze CAPS club and continued my education at Gateshead College. Both have really great coaches and helped me develop further as a player and gave me my first experience as a coach.
This inspired me to start my coaching degree and to play for Team Northumbria. Team Northumbria has developed my skills and knowledge of netball dramatically as the coaches is amazing!
What support have you received on your coaching journey?
I was fortunate to receive financial assistance from Tyne & Wear Sport which helped me to undertake my UKCC Level 2 qualification. This has been invaluable and will help me progress further with my coaching.
